When is the best time to switch?

I'm a new home owner, currently with N Power and I'm due to recieve my first quarters bill (which is actually only for a month).

I'm expecting I'll change providers as I get the impression that N Power are one of the most expensive, I'll obviously compare the different charges first.

The problem is the only usage I have to go on is this first months, I haven't has the heating on etc so it'll be a low reading. Is it enough for me to work out a comparison on?

How frequently to good MSErs change? If I do change, will I be tied to the new company for a fixed about of time?

To be honest if you choose the right company with reasonable costs, there shouldn't be a need to change suppliers at all. We changed from EDF to Ebico 3 years ago and haven't bothered to change since, as the small differences in unit price only saved us a small amount.

The best advice I could give you is rather than jumping ship everytime one appears slightly cheaper, is look at changing your usage habits. This will make a bigger impact to your bills than a small unit price change. Although if the unit charge show significant increase then it makes sense to move. Also try taking out duel fuel deal and ebilling, as that gives you a bit of discount on top too.
