ZONE ALARM HELP PLEASE

Could somebody please help me.

We have windows xp sp2, and from this board I thought to gain further security I would install zone alarm, this worked well for a day and then would not let me sign onto AOL, aol have a few problems with  z a according to them. So I have since uninstalled it.

I was really pleased with zone alarm whilst we had it, it was advising me of different threats to my computer which quite concerned me as the windows firewall never advises me about anything!! Am I ok just running windows firewall, and my anti virus software

I am fairly new to all this so help would be gratefully accepted.
Thanks

    hi there.
i am on aol with zone alarm on my pc and i dont have any problems at all connecting,do you know what sort of error messages you were getting?
  • Hello

    Thanks for the speedy reply

It was telling me that it could not connect and then it was highlighting a box saying that aol had detected firewall software and to check the settings on zone alarm which I did but it looked like it should allow aol to run.
Which version of zone alarm do you have, should I maybe consider getting a older version ?

    Thanks sak46

I have the latest zonealarm and aol running fine together

aol's page on zone alarm ( which is pretty old ) suggests you put the "internet security" zone to medium setting. (Firewall on zonealarms left-menu, "main" tab)

I don't mind this setting because my router also provides security

You should also check that zonealarm is allowing everything with aol in the title in the program control menu (program control on the left menu, "programs" tab)

It might be worth trying the zonealarm pro free trial. As I understand it, this configures a lot of stuff automatically - I assume it remembers these settings when it reverts to the free version?

Make sure when you re-install zonealarm you go for the clean install option then you can start fresh

    ZoneAlarm version:5.5.062.004
    TrueVector version:5.5.062.004
    Driver version:5.5.062.004

thats the version i've got, which i think is the latest version,if you re-install zone alarm it should automatically configure the aol for you
  • thanks to all of you who helped. I have installed the zone alarm pro ,and so far so good. thanks again

I agree re-install and try again.

It will give you options when new programs try to access the internet (eg AOL) you will get multiple boxes for all the crap that AOL has now days. Check the box and click ok for all aol related stuff.

    Should work OK after that.
