'Should the UK join the Euro?' poll discussion

United States of Europe? Just remember that the USA went through a bloody civil war to reach a complete political union, and the constituent states had far, far more in common than the EU member states. A civil war in modern times in Europe happened only 16 years ago - I think it would be dwarfed by the conflict that would arise at some point in the early USE days.
I don't want to put my descendents through that, simply to avoid going to the Bureau de Change. Acceptance of the Euro is the first step to a complete loss of meaningful sovereignty. Is it such a leap to imagine EU troops on the streets of Britain to quell an uprising against some EU legislation? I'm sure back in 1776, the founding fathers thought the conflict between 1861-65 unthinkable and a little ludicrous.0 -
Fact is rates go up and down over time and will continue to do so.
Dont like the poll because it does not cover my opinion. That is Yes we should go in but not yet as the political and economic conditions are not right (im talking a timescale of 10+ years minimum).Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.0 -
This poll is flawed, where the option for Join but when the balance is restored...
We should have joined at day one and now is NOT the time, should the Italians have wait for 1 Lira? Dont be daft, just because it nearly 1:1 does not mean its a good time to join! Quite the opposite... sorry this gets me quite annoyed.
Yes we should join, but at a time when the normal rate has returned!!!!!
Why didnt we join, cos The Sun says bash EU and after all its that sort of newspaper that runs the country as the governments are too scared to battle their war cries...

but convenience shouldn't be the main reason we adopt a common currency.
The Euro is about stability and transparancy, stability with cross-border contracts and living, and transparancy as we'd then see just how much some stuff is cheaper abroad which is why some powerful brands were against it.
It also helps soften any blows to a countries finances by helping share the burden a little, qhich could have been quite useful considering how the money grabbing "b"ankers screwed up this country last year.0 -
Should have joined it years ago. As long as we have to humour the little Englanders who want to wave their flags, the rest of us just get poorer. As for this nonsense about a "superstate", as regards governmental structures it makes no difference whether we join the euro or not.
And as for the ECB/Bank of England argument, it doesn't seem to me as if the Bank of England have made a particularly good job of it. :-)0 -
I don't really care so long as it buys me beer. Though if I didn't have to exchange cash to buy beer in Dublin or Bremen, that would be a bonus.
However, I suspect economists who engage in deliberations about such things have considerably more weighty concerns than whether I can avoid the inconvenience and expense of exchanging currency.
I'm also somewhat concerned that the pound has plummeted in value, which makes everything in the Eurozone really expensive for us right now... so I'm not sure I'd want us to be locked into the Eurozone at the current exchange rate. Maybe if it went back to £1=€1.40 or so, or if the Eurozone has a period of massive deflation in the meantime?0 -

Meanwhile, more and more countries will move to the Euro and any country outside of the zone will be facing a distinct disadvantage. Let's not forget that the Glorious Pound was up as high as 1.60EUR-1 ..............................bailed out? Not the ECB, that's for certain.
Do not worry everybody likes to kick the fallen...Remember the mighty may fall but will get up and rule once more.....
Just like a few months back when the Eur was $1.60 everyone said the US was finished. Wait a couple of years and we will see. Same applies to GB as long as it keeps its identity. I would say we should break completely out of the EU!!!..
Lets see who suffers? Isnt it a wonder that people still flock to this great country for jobs and making money instead of staying within the EU. or is it because its is not worth their while there??
Lets see europe get through the grand finale of this crisis, it is not over yet it has just started!!! As long as the incumbent government(which is in denial mode) does not come back, there is hope, irrespective of whoever wins.... The "Great" in Great Britian is still there.:j
Ofcourse voted for the ££££££££...............:beer::beer::beer::beer:0 -
I'm British by blood, not paper, as Hitler would put it lol However, although I voted for the unification of the Euro, I still don't like the idea of basically giving all powers to the ECB.
I doubt the Uk will ever want to lose control of its financies.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
We should not only stay out of the Euro, we ought to bring back the Grote!
Or at least return to Pounds, Shillings and Pence.I wonder why it is, that young men are always cautioned against bad girls. Anyone can handle a bad girl. It's the good girls men should be warned against.-David Niven0
