I need to block certain types of internet access during certain times of the day. I'm doing this on a netgear router that provides wifi access. The router has the capability to block particular sites using site addresses or keywords. So blocking ebay, facebook, youtube etc is easy, but how do I block live messenger?
Thanks
Thanks

Can you find out the port that messenger uses and block that through the router?
Be aware that web messenger exists and so you will need to block that website.

Block TCP ports 1863 and 443 outbound.
As kevrod says, you'd also have to block the website.0 -

Not sure how to block these ports on my netgear router. In the block sites page there is only the option to block domains and keywords. While this works fine with facebook, myspace, ebay etc it doesn't stop messenger...
ps I'm using a Netgear DG8340 -

messenger uses any available port to connect to the web. the only way you'd be able to do it on the dg834 routers is to block every port including port 80 - meaning nothing on the network can browse the internet
the only way i've found to completely block messenger is to do it in the computers software firewall.0 -

Thanks, I can see how to do it now. Unfortunately it appears that if I block all the necessary ports on the router I'll also block legitimate access through the router.0 -

You could try blocking access to the servers that WLM uses for it's functionality. Take a look here and see.0
