What's this pipe in my garden?

While I was removing a spit of turf from my garden today, I came across a
yellow, flexible corrugated pipe. It was about three inches down from the top level of the lawn. It was about about 6 yards away from the patio and 10 yards from the back of the house and about 2 yards away from my neighbour's fence - just sitting there. I could have put a spade through it.

I carefully replaced the turf, put a marker on the spot and tip-toed off. I've no idea what the heck it is. I've looked on the internet using search words like 'corrugated' 'yellow' 'flexible' 'garden' and pipe. I've come across photos of yellow gas pipes and it's not like that - it's bigger in diameter and corrugated.

Any advice you can give me, please?

Many thanks for your time if you are reading this.

What sort of diameter is it?

Do you live in newish property or older?

Was the duct /pipe found on an open plan type front lawned area?

Have you excavated either side to see which way its pointing?

    Can we have a picture?

That sounds like a land drain, was it also perforated? If so it is almost defiantly so, but should be laid in/surrounded by pea gravel.

Is your garden stepped/sloped? That would also explain it's presence.

Alternatively, someone could have laid it to thread a water/electricity supply in, does it head for any outbuildings?

It could be a soakaway pipe for your rainwater drainage, some have slits in the sides to allow water out of the pipe, others will just be piped down into a deeper hole that may be filled with stones. To check it, earth up a piece of it and look at what direction its running from, throw down a decent sized bucket or two of warm water in the nearest rain water gully, you should feel the pipe heat up slightly if it is a land drain.

The only time I've seen corrugated yellow pipe is to house cable tv lines......where was it running to and from?

Wow, thanks for coming to my aid so quickly - I appreciate it.

I'd say it's about 20cm or 4 inches across. It's in the back garden and it's not near any outbuildings.

The house was built in the early 70s. There is a very slight slope from the patio up to the back of the garden.

I haven't excavated beyond one spit of turf (yet!) but it seems to run from a huge tree on one side of the garden towards the patio and the back of the house. house. There is a drain cover on that side of the patio.

I'll tease away the soil and further spits of turf tomorrow and take a right good look at it to see whether I can see any perforations, or a deeper hole, and where exactly it runs too.

I'll post a picture.... if my flippin' camera behaves itself for long enough.

    Once again, thank you.

the standard, pipeline color codes are:

    yellow for gas & fuel.
    blue for water.
    red for electrical power.
    orange for telecoms.
    green for sewers & drains.
    violet for irrigation & slurry.

Well that was a marathon dig and a half, phew!

It was a perforated tube, looking exactly like the top picture (above). It started in the middle of the lawn (where it was all bunged up with soil) and snaked around the garden ending up in a border - where the other end was bunged up with soil. I don't know what good it's doing for drainage but I was just relieved that it wasn't protecting any cables or utility pipes.

Thank you so much for giving me the confidence to tackle this mystery.
