Unfussy child will not eat breakfast

Hi All

I have searched all your threads on here to get help and not found anything to help so feel free to move this if there is something I have missed, which is likely.

Anyway, my 5 year old son will eat anything and everything, bless him, except breakfast! Whatever I give him I have to remind him and moan at him and threaten to take toys off him to eat it. He usually has cereal that he picks out (with my approval) and still wont eat that! I want him to eat breakfast because it will help him concentrate in school and also the times he does not eat breakfast (no time as we have had to leave) he moans for the 20 minute walk to school that he is hungry. So do I let him go hungry in the hope he learns or do you have any ideas on what to give him.

I have tried in the past all types of cereal, toast with jam/chocolate spread on (desperation to get him to eat still didnt work), twinks with dried fruit etc in, scones, beans on toast, pancakes, thats all I can think of at the moment. Was planning on trying soft boiled eggs with soilders tomorrow then realised I had no egg cups so thats out. Will get some when I see some cheap and try that but in mean time am looking for anything I can make at home. I love baking (dont have time to do enough of it).

Thanks

  • I have the same problem,I can't no eat at all early in the morning.and if I take some cereal or fruit my stomach feel bad. so I prefer no to.
Is problem because I have to leave home to go to work.
I take a banana or sandwich for later.
Maybe if you son weak up earlier, he'll feel hungry and eat something.
  • Hi - I have this problem with my 14 year old - she has never eaten breakfast.

    Sometimes she will eat:
    Crumpets
    fruit
    yogurt
    muffins
english muffins - toasted with cheese or egg and bacon

Have you tried making toast and letting him eat it on the way to school , or putting some of his cereal ( dry in a bag) and letting him have that on the way?

You can cut up an egg box to make an egg cup if that helps!

  • Have you tried yoghurt and or fruit? He might like that, or make some banana muffins they are a good start.
A few other things you could try are croissants, bagels and cream cheese with a little crispy bacon or waffles.
Another little ploy is to tell him that every day you will be having breakfast from a different country Croissants = France, Yoghurt and Fruit = Greece, Waffles = Belgium, Muffins or pancakes = America and so on.
Failing that Ask him the night before if there is anything special that he want's for breakfast.

    What about trying sausages?

Or perhaps fruit salad/ melon/bananas etc?

I never thought of that, thanks. But if he gets up with me then the 2 younger ones will (he is also the best sleeper so other 2 up before him) and if all 3 are up I wont have time to make all breakfasts and do packed lunches etc in morning.

But I do like that idea so I will see if I can get him up tomorrow with me without waking the other 2 and he can wake up before eating breakfast ,whilst I am running around like a headless chicken as per normal on a morning!!!!!!!!!! :P

    Thanks again.

Can you make the packed lunches the night before, to give you a little more time in the mornings?

Wow, what a lot of ideas. He wont eat sausages and he is a bit funny about crumpets. I will pop into wilkinsons on wednesday and some egg cups or even make my own, thanks.

I did not think of the toast on the way. So will also try that I think. Maybe give him toast and what he doest eat, take with us.

Lots of brilliant ideas for me to try. Thank you so much everyone. I will go through and try everything with him until I find something that works (then try the next when that stops working, ha ha)!!!

Thanks again everyone, I really do appreciate all the ideas.

Olliebeak - dh prefers packed lunches made the same day so I do them all together in the morning. I am a sahm so even though everything is shared I do feel that dh does deserve some perks for working and me not so I make his lunch fresh. Its about the only nice thing I do for him!! :P
  • i have one child who isnt a breakfast fan. he likes his cooked breakfast but to be honest i dont really like faffing about doing that....weekends are fine when he gets a fried egg on toast.

another one he might have is cocoa pops with hot milk. he wont take milk cold and plain so thats a plus. hot chocolate is another one which he is fond of.

how about smoothies? a meal in itself practically.

the other three have cereal and the twins either have it dry or with milk
