I've just downloaded itunes even though i've no IPOD and don't want to buy any music (I want free podcasts).
Have you considered any of the alternatives? You don't have to use iTunes.

m4a is simply the file extension iTunes uses for AAC files. Songs purchased from the iTunes Store do not have DRM on them, so you can do whatever you like with them. If you have an mp3 player that can't play AAC files, you can convert them in iTunes. Just go to Edit > Preferences and change your import settings to mp3. Then, right click on the file(s) you want to convert, and select "Create mp3 version"

I tried doing this for podcasts I have purchased but it comes up with the message that it could not be converted because protected files cannot be converted to other formats. Any ideas?

It was the only site that had the podcast I wanted.
What makes you think it's not available elsewhere?

If those files do have DRM protection then I think that you can burn them to a CD. Then 'rip' the CD as mp3 files.
I suppose that you could use a CD-RW disc over again if they don't all fit.
    There's a write-up here:- http://www.applemacvideo.com/articles/how-to-burn-music-cd-in-itunes.html
There's probably more information out there on the web about this subject.
