Scappage Scheme - advice please

Hi all,

We qualify for the Scrappage scheme (car over 10 years old, have owned it since June 08, MOT'd until June 2010, taxed til the end of the year and insured) and have bought a brand new car. Went to the dealership 2 weeks ago and put down a deposit on our new car, which is still in Italy (Fiat) and won't be available for collection until October 24th. Finance in place and agreement has been signed.

Problem is our current car is on it's last legs. Found out today that gearbox is on it's way out and it's leaking oil from the head gasket. Of course we don't want to be spending money on it because we're collecting a brand new car on 24.10, but my question is - if our current car breaks down before 24th October, can we trade it in even if we have to tow it to the dealership?

There's a slim chance that with careful driving it will last another 4 weeks, but the chances are greater that it won't, and a new gearbox and head gasket will cost around £500-£700 all in, ridiculous money to spend on a car that's about to be scrapped!

As long as you had a valid MOT and the car was taxed then you're fine, surprised your dealer hasn't gone through this with you when you placed the order, indeed he/she should have taken copies of the V5 and tax disc at the time of order.

Oh they did, they have copies of everything and the deal is done so to speak. We were just worried because now the car seems as if it won't last until 24th October when it will need to be driven (or towed) to the dealer so we can leave it with them and drive away in our new car, and we didn't know if they would still accept the car in a broken down state.

You're fine, the funds have been allocated and your car met all the requirements at the time of order, your car will now be scrapped, so relax and look forward to your new car.:j

I had an agreement with our dealers that they would come to collect and they were true to their word.

Yay!! Can't wait to have a car that doesn't sound like a tugboat with the clutch slipping all over the place! Wouldn't it be funny if it broke down on the way to collect the new car (about 20 miles) and we had to be towed there by the AA??

Thanks, it's good to be reassured. Couldn't find anything anywhere that said the scrap car had to be driveable, just that it had to be MOT'd, insured, taxed and owned for a year :T
  • Hi everyone, I would most appreciate your advice / opinions on the following:

I have an old Peugeot 106. I have put it in for an MOT and it will cost £600 + to get it through. Most of the repairs are to do with worn parts (notably brake pads). However, there was rust noted. It easily qualifies for scrappage (assuming I get it through the MOT).

The garage is of the opinion it is still a good car (good engine, low mileage for age, 85, 000 N Reg, bought from new by myself)

He says should keep it - but of course he may be biased! (As might end up a regular)

Car has never broken down on me so in this sense has been a good car, but am I correct, once you get rust, it only gets worse, right? So I would be best getting myself another car, correct?

If so, is it better to go for scrappage or a 3-4 year old car (due to depreciation)

I have in mind the Hyundai i10 (has good reviews, 55 mpg and low tax bracket plus 5 year warranty- with scrappage list price is £5,100 (entry level model £4,995). I might be able to haggle this down to £4800 and probably could put down half this and take the rest out of my mortgage which i overpaid, would then pay off in 10 months or so.

\what I like is that it would take the worry out of MOT and service that i would still have with an older car

Also, I know 0 about cars, so scared I might get ripped off if I buy 2nd hand.

Do you agree therefore for someone in my situation this is the bst option?

The reason I ask is I read something about experts saying that scrappage is not a good deal as the £2000 is eaten up by deprciation : But surely new is still better than older due to less likely to need repairs and less likely to buy a pile of junk if buyer has no knowledge of cars?

THANKS IN ADVANCE , superb list ..keep saving..

PS Of course I probably shot myself in the foot by not considering this BEFORE my MOT was due, but fasir enough, my fault for reading carefully ToC that valid MOT needed! Still £600 maybe still worth it to get the scrappage.

So you have to spend £600 to get a discount worth £2000. On top of this some of the £2k discount would be obtainable scrappage or not.

when does the MOT end? Can you use it now without putting in for repairs.

In your case I think you need to get detailed finances with and without scrappage as it may be your as well sending the 106 to a breakers for £100 then negotiating a good deal without scrappage and spending £600.
