A&L or ING?

  • I can't get past being nervous of any foreign compensation scheme (ING), having almost got 'burned' with both Icesave AND Kaupthing Edge. Not saying the UK FSCS would necessarily be safer but at least I'd be dealing with my own country.

Personal opinion only, but feel you are hardly comparing like-for-like with Iceland and the Dutch Government. The EU have already said that no major Euro Bank will be allowed to fail, plus the Dutch Govt., last year "invested" 10 billion Euro in ING, so they have a vested interest in seeing it stays afloat. Too easy to get paranoid around here. I have more than my "safe" 50K with Santander because I feel that this is another that would not be allowed to go to the wall. I also have a good sum with ING as does my wife.
  • Shud have also mentioned that at present, A & L operate on their own seperate license so you can have a further "safe" £50k, under the Santander brolly.
Both banks are good bets at the moment. Stick with the winners.
