Independent Gas Transporters
Do any comparison sites take the extra costs of having an IGT into account ?
Is there a summary of the different suppliers attitude to IGT's ?
Scottish Power charge approx GBP41.60 pa extra.
Some suppliers will not take me people with IGT's.
Does it really cost suppliers more money to handle customers with IGTs eg ELF at home.

Tad Off topic but, I understand that Southern Electric, (?and possibly others in the same group?) have done away with the extra service charge.0

I switched from Powergen as they introduced a charge for IGT. I switched to EDF who do not charge for IGT's0

Thanks for the replies. I have just started a swap to London Energy (EDF).
I really think a lot of people don't realise they have got an IGT, Scottish Power tries to hide it by putting the "less than 80p per day" cost at the end of the small print & they don't itemise it in any way. Many new homes <10 years old use IGTs - so make sure you check your small print else the comparison website best buy may not be so good. I really think OFGEM should step in & make them itemise it so that it is clear to all consumers.0 -
Gas transporters
I have in the past contacted energy watch with regards to this issue of most switch sites not showing the true costs, however here is a marker for you take your last gas bill, you will have a meter reference point number on it, depending upon the letters. Most of the uk is connected via transco and my understanding is that if your connected to a transco pipeline then their is no charge, however their does seem to be an emerging pattern with new estates not being serviced by transco, so, how to find out, ring your current supplier and they will tell you whom supplys your home pipe wise.

I have refered to elsewhere but at last price increase Southern withdrew the extra charge according to the literature received at the time0 -
Developers building new houses are using IGTs to connect the new properties to the gas main as they are cheaper than Transco. In the past the IGT was installing for free or even paying the developer to be allowed to install. The developer knows that nobody is ever going to decide not to buy a house just because it is connected to an IGT (even if they bother to find out), so they may as well take the extra profit.
The IGT recoups the loss on the work they did for the developer, by charging the owner of the new property (via the gas supplier) an excessive delivery charge for ever more.
Ofgem has finally started to look at the dodgy deals that have been done, that have disadvantaged the consumer.
