Birthday Present

I'm not really sure which board to post this in, so apologies if it's in the wrong one.

At what age do you think it's ok to give money as a birthday present to children?

I have a nephew who will be 10 this birthday, and really can't find anything suitable (that he hasn't already got!). I was thinking of geting a gift voucher for Amazon - is this a good idea or not?

My DS is 9, almost 10 and hopes he will get "cash" for his birthday. Amazon is great, although I think my DS would still prefer a note in a card so he can spend it in the shops.

Edited to add : Last year my son was given a wallet with cash in it from someone, he was chuffed to bits with that. At least it means you can wrap something up for him if you feel uncomfortable not giving him "a present".

Thanks Gingin - I remember when I was younger I preferered cash too - but that was so long ago, I can't remember what age I was then.

The only thing I have to think about now is how much to give

That's a great idea about the wallet - thank you.

Yeah I think a voucher or money would be fine, my kids are 4, 9 and 13.

We often give our niece and nephew (11 and 8) money for Christmas, birthdays, etc as they have everything they could really want. Their Mum & Dad usually collect it to one side (or most of it) and in the summer they go to learn sailing, or learn skiing in the winter - so our money pays for an 'experience' that they will never forget rather than a toy which will be cast aside within a week

My sons 10 and 12 both love getting money...any amount is great at that age. they both have savings accounts so both of them like cheques.

For their friends ( close ones ) I usually give them a tenner and some sweets all wrapped up together they love that .
