Car Servicing Advice pls

Hi all

I'm being quoted £190 to service my new shape Ford Fiesta. This will be the 3rd service although its only done 20,000 miles. This is the main dealer and I've always tried to get a full service history from a main dealer since I think it always looks better when you sell it.

Thing is, I've just moved house and could do with cutting back a bit. Is a main dealer service worth the extra? Or will it make no difference when I come to sell it? Thinking about it, I generally part ex the car anyway.

Plus, I'm being quoted nearly £45 for a MOT too. Is that the going rate nowadays?

Thanks

in terms of the price for the MOT, £35-45 is about right, thats if there are no problems with the car.

I to have a new shape fiesta and this is the third service. For a ford service i was quoted £150 for the service then £40 for the mot, they also gave me an option of their own service and including the mot it was £89. The difference being th latter does not use ford original parts there fore my warrenty would be void. However these cars come with a 3 year warrenty there for only 2 weeks after my service the warrenty will not be valid. So i opted fo the £89 version and i still get a maindealer stamp in the book which will look like the previous 2years stamp. If you are wanting to keep the warrenty which in my case i doubt anything will happen in two weeks, touch wood, you can get your srvice done an an independant local garage which will most likely be cheaper and if they use ford parts the warranty will not be void.

I found the cheapest service to be Nationwide AutoCentres at £119 for a full service.

This is AA recommended (so looks alright in your service book) and you get Tesco clubcard points.

You can get Ford original parts direct from a Ford main dealer parts dept.
and then get a local mechanic to fit it for probably a lot cheaper than a Ford main dealer.

However when you go to a main dealer, they will do additional work
recommended by Ford but not made available to the general public when
they have discovered a fault or problem with your model of car. These are
often unadvertised for commercial reasons-ie they don't want their
competitors or customers to know that they have a had problem. So even if
you don't go all the time, it is usually better if you get your car serviced there once in a while at least.
And there was a classic case a few years ago with BMW. Their engines
were breaking down on one model after several thousand miles. BMW found
the problem and modified all the cars that they sericed, but would not
recompense any motorist who had to fork out for a replacement engine who did not use their main dealers
