My daughter has virgin internet in the house that she shares with other students. Her room is at the back of the house and she cannot get a signal form there on her laptop ! Is there anything that I can purchase to boost the signal for her ? Any help would be gratefully recieved, I am completely dense when it comes to technology !!! Many thanks.

  • Sounds to me like you need to move the router that spreads the wireless signal to a more central point in the house.

Thanks, I think they've tried that. Would a usb adapter thing plugged into her laptop help do you think ?

    Not likely.

Some routers have stronger and wider ranging signal strength. Might a little pricey to change that though...

It's not ideal but have a look at a homeplug or powerline set up.
Basically, you plug one each unit into the mains, one at the router and the other where the laptop is and that is pretty much it. You should be able to get a kit (pair of adapters) for around £50 from your local independent computer shop.
  • I agree with damo24, the homeplug kit will do the job nicely. Have set a few of them up for people and they are great.

  • +1 for homeplugs - I have a homeplug wireless access-point which gives me a 2nd wireless connection point that covers the dead-spot (far from my wireless router). So I now have wireless acess throughout the house

Sorry for checking the obvious but does her laptop have wireless capability and if so, can she connect when closer to the router?

If yes to both, add my vote to the homeplug solution.
