We have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro V2010 (or maybe a V2000, can't remember) which DW uses just for surfing. She's complained that it is very slow (and getting slower) which I'm putting down to need a clean install of XP (it's never been reinstalled) and the weight of Firefox plus modern anti-virus software struggling on the 512MB (or maybe it's only 256MB) RAM it has.

The spec states PC2100 DDR266 200pin SDRAM SODIMM memory which seems very expensive (£15 for a 512MB is the best I can find). I'm presuming that's because the demand is for newer, faster stuff. Could I use something more common and cheaper (such as a couple of these)?

  • No, these memory modules are not compatible with your laptop, they are a completely different socket pin. I think the price you quoted for the PC2100 are very cheap, do make sure that the memory is low density otherwise it won't work.

Are you sure? I accept they may not be electrically compatible, but physically, both are 200 pin SODIMM.

  • The memory you refer to is DDR2, whereas the one in your laptop is DDR so that makes them incompatible. You are right that they are both 200 pin Sodimm for Laptops, but that's where the similarity ends.

on a quick look, cheapest I've found is this:-

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B001D4O616/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&qid=1254146162&sr=8-1&condition=new

£38. Don't think yours can be SDRAM, it's too cheap :(

According to crucial, your lappy should take these:-

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Laptop-Notebook-Memory-SODIMM-PC2700/dp/B000N5PWR8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1254146500&sr=1-1

£26 for 1GB....if you have 2 sticks fitted, replace one of your existing sticks with one of these, or if only 1 slot in use, add one :)

This is the wrong memory, this is SDR, whereas the laptop takes DDR.

Firstly, use CPU-Z to determine how many of the memory slots are in use. If one is free and only 256 or 512MB RAM is installed, you might get away with installing another 256 MB RAM for £4.95 delivered.

Otherwise, you are looking at £12.99 for a 512MB module or £24.99 for 1GB.
  • See if you can get some from ebay. I did and saved a small fortune.

If they were cheaper on eBay, why not link to them to show the OP?

The danger is that the OP will buy incompatible or second hand memory in the hope of getting it cheaper. Let alone having to wait for it to arrive from Hong Kong or similar.

Stick to the advice in my post, rather than make a false economy.

Yeah, I know, the amazon linky was for DDR...originally Fifer said he needed SD, so the £38 stick was SD. Then I checked his lappy spec.....

..and I second Donnie's use of CPU-Z, cracking little prog for such situations :)
