[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Hi. Can anyone offer me advice. The hard drive on my laptop is filling up and I don't know what with! Well I do know that a lot of it is filled up with my photos, but lately the bit I did have free is filling up inexplicably.
Three days ago I had about 1.5gb free, a day later it was nearly full and all I'd done was browse the internet. I did the disc cleanup and deleted all cookies etc and managed to free up about 700mb. Yesterday it was almost full, and I've managed to free up about 200mb. I've run Spydoctor, Spybot and AVG, found tracking cookies and deleted them. I've defragged - which made no difference. I thought I might have a virus these didn't find so from reading another thread I've downloaded and run Malwarebytes and Hijack This. Malwarebytes said no malcious items detected, and the Hijack This log means nothing to me!

THIS IS THE MALWAREBYTES LOG.

If anyone can offer any advice - in really simple terms please 'cause I'm not really that computer savvy - I'd be very grateful.

Thanks in anticipation.

  • What are the machine specs? What version of Windows are you running?

Download Filepro a small portable app that provides info about files on your system including size and where they are. Very useful.

EDIT: you have a awful lot of stuff running on boot, what are your boot times like?

When you did Disc Cleanup did you open the other tab, and delete all other System Restore points, this will eat 1GB a week easily on Vista with average use.

It wont use 1 gig a week it has an allocated space and when thats full it deletes the older ones. That would be a major flaw in windows if it did that, even M$ arent that stupid.

do you shut down your software properly, you might be filling it with temporary files, I ran Ccleaner and get about 100 MB a week off it.

  • Hi. Thank you all for responding. It's a Toshiba A100 laptop, 1gb RAM, 80gb hard drive, running Vista Home Premium.

It takes quite a while to boot up - about 90 seconds from turning it on to getting the password screen up, then the best part of another minute to get the front screen up, and a little circle goes round in the middle of the screen for a minute or so before I ca get the internet up. It probably takes about 5 minutes from turning it on to getting online. (Which is probably really slow, but is okay for me in comparison to my old pc when I used to be with AOL, which took forever).

I didn't delete the System Restore points when I did the disc cleanup.

It depends on how lazy I'm feeling about shutting down software properly. Sometimes I close everything down properly, other times I just shut down the laprop.

Yesterday I had about 200mb free. I deleted some photos whiich left about 800mb free - this morning I've got 1.57gb free.

I know that temporary files etc take up space so I delete them and cookies quite regularly but it was the sudden disappearance of over 1gb overnight which really puzzled me and now the equally sudden re-appearance of almost the same amount since yesterday.

Is there anything in the Hijack This log that I need to be aware of or taking action on?

    Thanks again.

Try running a scan with Superantispyware and/or Malwarebytes. As mentioned before you have loads of items that are running automatically when the computer boots up which would explain the reason why its slow. I could tell you what I would stop or remove but its personal preference.

Thanks for your reply. I have already run a scan with Malwarebytes - I posted the log in my original post. It didn't find anything. What would you remove to speed up the boot time?
  • Go into add/remove programs and get rid of everything you haven't used in the last three months.

If you don't use it once every three months you probably don't need it
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical
