HELP - Call costs to Australia!

Hello, don't know if anyone will be able to help me...
My father-in-law ( who is 82 and a bit forgetful) rung his son in Australia at the weekend, left a message on the answerphone and then put the phone down BUT forgot to press the button to hang up. Then it was left all night, not discovered till the next morning. Of course now he is very upset about how much this is going to cost him and he is berating himself for being so stupid. Will the phone have stayed connected all night? Is there any way of helping him? He is worried it may cost hundreds. They pay their bill quarterly so it will be months of worry before they find out the cost.
Thanks to anyone who can advise.

You didn't say which phone provider your father-in-law has. Call details can be seen in Recent Calls for a BT online account a day or so after they are made. TalkTalk gives the amount spent only. In either case you could also phone to ask.
Sorry, I don't know what happens with an answering machine when it runs out of recording time. Perhaps it drops the line.0 -
They could always phone BT and find out what the actual cost of the call was.0
