Removal of Prepayment Meter

I recently purchased and moved into a repossessed house, the previous owners had a prepayment meter installed and left £86 in debt on the meter, never mind the nightmare of getting a duplicate key for switching the electric on when we moved in, we have been told by Swalec that they will not remove the meter and install a standard credit meter on this property. Despite personally having a good credit history and previously been a customer for nearly 20 years, they say that its unlikely that the meter will ever be changed by themselves or other utility companies, as the address now has bad credit history. Is this right or does anyone know how to solve this problem? As I believe the costs are increased if you dont have direct debits set up.

It sounds like rubbish especially if you have recent history with them. The debt is personal not the properties. Any Supplier can credit vet you and if you pass they can change the meter. I would ask again.

If no response over the phone I would do a written complaint, often those in call centres have little or no power. But if you get someone in complaints/customer service they can usually do more for you.
I would also ensure they clear the debt off the meter in the meanwhile as you don't owe them anything.
