What I do't get is why leather is bad, cows die, they aren't immortal...use the hide.

Apparenty not all leather used in making shoes is a by-product of the meat industry.

I was told some high quality leathers are from animals that are reared and killed purely for their skin. Goodness knows what then happens to the discarded meat in those cases?

Actually - leather is onle of the most profitable parts of the animal not a bi product at all.- as meat is so cheap now & subsidised too.
Its also one of the least greenest as they have to use so many chemicals & dyes to make it become tough & last - hence all the health issues & polution

the worst thing I ever saw was a video of cows having their skins ripped off whilst still alive in a UK slaughterhouse.
I thought the stun gun/bolt knocked em out but as the animals are pushed through so fast the slaughtermen do make many mistakes so the slaughter gun does not always work or they miss animals out.

One they went through the section of being stunned chains drag em up to be hund by the back legs, their throats are cut open while going along the conveyor process so they bled to death - usually while peeing & crapping themselves if one of the 40% still alive,
Then they start cutting & ripping the skin off & the screaming was haunting as the animals thrash around in pain

All of this done in view of the other animals in the queue.

    Who said it was humane?

People may mock, I also find all these eco hippies who are only into tree hugging and killing there own animals (basically hypocrites) there is no such thing as a meat eating environmentalist, they say leather is better for the planet than leather alternatives, what dross.

Neither is that good but leather is worse on many grounds.

    (quoted from those in know)

Although some leather makers deceptively tout their products as "eco-friendly," turning skin into leather also requires massive amounts of energy and dangerous chemicals, including mineral salts, formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, and various oils, dyes, and finishes, some of them cyanide-based. Most leather produced in the U.S. is chrome-tanned; all wastes containing chromium are considered hazardous by the EPA. Tannery effluent contains large amounts of pollutants, such as salt, lime sludge, sulfides, and acids. The process of tanning stabilizes the collagen or protein fibers in skins so that they actually stop biodegrading so that leather doesn't rot right off your feet. Additionally, to raise the animals whose skin eventually becomes leather, trees are cleared to create pastureland, vast quantities of water are used, and feedlot and dairy-farm runoff create a major source of water pollution. Huge amounts of fossil fuels are consumed in livestock production. (By contrast, plastic wearables account for only a fraction of the petroleum used in the U.S.)

People who work in and live near tanneries suffer too. Many are dying from cancer caused by exposure to toxic chemicals used to process and dye the leather. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the incidence of leukemia among residents in an area near one tannery in Kentucky was five times the U.S. average. Arsenic, a common tannery chemical, has long been associated with lung cancer in workers who are exposed to it on a regular basis. Studies of leather-tannery workers in Sweden and Italy found cancer risks "between 20% and 50% above [those] expected."

Wearing leather hurts animals, the environment, and the people who produce it. The only ones who benefit are the people who profit from the misery and suffering of others.

There is nothing funny or cool about Cancer.

I have purchased many items of footware from Vegetarian Shoes in Brighton and on the whole have been very happy but I have never purchased a vegan jacket from them.

If anyone has ever purchased one of there coats or one of these please could they let me know what they thought and feedback on the coat they bought from them.

I am choosing between two versions of one design at present:-
    this one

    or this one

I did order one a year or so ago but sent it back as the fit wasn't right. Nice looking jackets though.
I did end up getting a non leather jacket in Miss Selfridge in the end for half the price.

    usually we get
"vegetarian shoes" does that mean we can eat em

I was sent a health report from the us the other day linking joint pain, skin conditions, gout & some cancers with the chemicals used to make animal skins waterproof and hard wearing.
When the feet sweat they also absorb all of this toxic stuff dragging it into your systems.

Lorica lasts far better & better value for money, more eco friendly & dosent make us ill
