can you tape from freeview

I bought a freeview set top box today to see if I could improve my picture as I have quite bad reception at times. Some of the channels are better, but my problem is I cannot access my video when freeview is on and vice versa. Both freeview and video are connected to back of tv and I have to remove one of the scarts to enable me to watch the other. I want to tape from the freeview, is there a way to do this? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Depending on the number of scart and/or other sockets you have - you should be able to connect outside arial >> freeview, then scart from freeview>>video, then scart from video>>tv. If you also connect from freeview to normal tv aerial socket, you should be able to watch channels 1-5 (ie terrestial), while you record any freeview channel.

I tried that but it didn't work. I only have one scart socket on video so I had to use a scart splitter but using that neither freeview or video worked.

I have tv ariel into freeview and video, scart from tv to freeview and scart from video to tv but can only watch one and have to unplug freeview scart to watch video. Hope this makes sense.

Your freeview box should sit in the middle of the scart chain between the TV and the VCR (assuming the freeview box has two scarts). ie Video>>freeview>> TV. To record from freeview you will need to select the AV input for the VCR.
When playing back you may need to put the freeview box into standby.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Only tv has two scart sockets, freeview and video only have one each, does that mean I can't tape from freeview?

    Thanks.

If you connected the freeview box to the video and turned them both on, you would be able to record from freeview... but not watch at the same time, unless you use a normal aerial wire to connect the video to the tv.

What sockets/connections, apart from the scart, ones do you have on your freeview box and VCR?

An obvious question - but is your aerial input from the roof connected to your VCR or freeview box?

Have you tuned in your VCR so that it is on the right channel to pick up the signal from freeview to record? On mine it shows A1 or A2

OK, I have had the same problem, so hope this works for you.
    Aerial to Freeview (via co-axial),
    Freeview to video (with Scart)
    Video to TV (with coaxial)
As someone has said, put TV on, say channel '8', and tune it to receive Video output... then you need to tune Video to receive Freeview signal. Obviously the video is already tuned with channels 1-5, so tune the video to receive freeview on its channel 8 as well, so it's easy to remember that 8 is the magic number whether you are recording or watching!
    Good luck,

Thanks for all the suggestions will try them tomorrow.

In answer to what connections I have they are as follows:-

Ariel coaxial to freeview - second coaxial from freeview to video and another back from video to tv I think.

Scarts I have two, one connecting tv to freeview and one connecting tv to video.

With this set up I can only watch either tv/freeview or tv/video, I cannot go between the three and if the freeview is turned on then that seems to override the video and tv.

I did mess about with my daughter's freeview today, which has two scart sockets and seemed to get a result using yet another scart between freeview and video, but daughter will not give up her freeview! So as my freeview only has one scart then if I do not manage to sort out tomorrow with the previous suggestions, I will either have to return and get another freeview with two sockets or give up.

Thanks again for all the help.
