Is it possible to claim for kitchen appliances on home insurance?

As my kitchen, fridge and dishwasher have all broken down, phoned insurance company but they say they are not covered as its a mechanical fault!!!! Whats the point of having it if i cant claim for contents? Just wondering does anyone know if you can or do you need a different policy. Thanks.

The point of having it is that you are covered if they are stolen, destroyed or damaged in a fire, that sort of thing. You are not covered for routine maintenance which is what you need.

There are kitchen appliance breakdown policies available - Domestic and General do one, though I can't particularly recommend it. PAYG is generally better value and if you have a trusted local repairer it gets fixed a lot quicker than going through D&G's cumbersome procedure.
  • As above... Your home insurance policy will out line the 'perils' that are covered i.e fire, flood, theft... not breakdown or wear and tear.

Its still staggering the amount of people who think home insurance is there to replace products when they break down.... Thats why Argos, Comet etc try to sell you insurance when you buy it.

Mechanical faults aren't covered by home insurance.
This is stated in your policy documents (which I'm guessing you didn't read).

Check your original paperwork, you may have an extended guarantee. Some appliances come with 1-5 years guarantee or service.

Honestly - this line keeps reappearing! As well as Credit Cards, loans, DFW, Banks, Savings, etc etc there should also be a section named 'Didnt read terms and need to blame someone'
