If you haven't go Word installed (MS Office is available for the Mac) you either need to buy it to edit and produce Word files (just like you would on Windows), or as randomtask says use a free equivalent such as OpenOffice.

You can of course buy Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac if you like. Or goto the Microsoft webpage to download a trial version of it to try it out. If OpenOffice.org doesn't work properly with the document Office 2008 will.

  • iWork is supposed to be able to import word documents (.doc) into Pages though I've never tried it myself. Not sure about MS Works compatibility though.

But you would only have a trial version of iWork anyway, and that will expire. I think you're better off adopting OpenOffice as your standard office suite. It's free and very usable. Just because you've got a Mac, you don't have to use Apple designed applications. Just like you don't always have to use only Microsoft software on Windows computers
