How long do companies have to take money from my card?

Hi all

After a bit of advice as found nothing on the forums at all.

We went on holiday in August and as we checked out of our hotel paid for our room on our American Express. The total was around £560.

The bill shows the money coming off and the last 4 digits of the card number, but the money has not yet been debited from our account. Everything else (including a seperate hotel from the same chain over there) has come off from our trip, the only thing that hasn't is this hotel. Normally payments come off our Amex on the same day on the website, but we've still had nothing took off......

How long can they still claim the money from the card? I'm fully expecting it to go on at some point so not counting our chickens at this stage, but after 2 months can they still take it off?

    Yes.

Legally they can take it for 6 years - but card issuers have systems in place to stop it happening (at least automatically) well before that. 6 months rings a bell but ICBW.

It MIGHT never get charged but don't count on it.

    Legally they have 6 years.
Even if the card issuer stops the payment, you would still legally owe the money.

So you could put the amount away in a savings account and keep the interest but you can't count your chickens until 6 years have passed..
