Driving without exhaust - Illegal?

Hello All MSE'rs,
My Exhaust gave up the ghost recently and has now come completely off my Mondeo at home after hanging on during a trip down the M40.
Is it illegal to drive it to get it fixed
Anyone know?

Moving traffic offence - construction & use attracting a fine and possibily an endorsment.

I'm sure if you were to get stopped and you explained you were on your way to get it fixed they would be okay with it!!! May have to get it proven an MOT centre if they wanna be funny and make you prove that did get it fixed.

Hmm maybe have to get towed then

So, the moment it becomes detached I'm committing an offence?

You seem to know you're legalites ohreally. Are you the caught or the capturer?

if you see the fuzz take your foot of the accelerator they will never know unless they are behind you, book it in for the repair first then if you get stopped they can check your actualy on your way to have it fixed.

Realistically there's gotta be a kwik fit or similar within a few miles of you. Drive carefully over there having phoned to make an enquiry.

It'd be a pretty vindictive copper to book you for a perfectly reasonable use of car like that. (unless he stops you speeding on the way :-)

I'd have thought the greatest danger was driving with it hanging off while you where on the M40. If it had come off what would have happened to the vehicles following you? I know I wouldn't fancy hitting an exhaust at 70mph!
    Russ.
  • I didn't realise it was hanging off until I slowed down at the end of my journey on the M40. Even then, it just sounded like it had a blow in it.
It wasn't until I looked at it I realised it had detached itself from the rear box and my attempts to tie it back up to take it to the garage were obviously too much stress for the other end, which wasn't corroded; it snapped at the welded joint.
I guess my tugging around and canterlever effect snapped it.

Exhausts aren't the most expensive thing that could have gone on your car.

Get it fixed. Ring around the garages and get some quotes...
  • Cost wasn't really the issue. Just getting it there.
Mind you, as the Cat has broken off, it kinda make the replacement the same price as the car is worth ;-(
