Archos DVR - TV docking station - can't get it working...

I've recently bought a TV docking station for my Archos 504, such as the one in the link:

However, I cannot get it working despite having tried every combination of set-up (TV+DVD+VCR).
The instruction don't help much and I am unsure when exactly the remote is needed.
The signal from the Archos to the TV does not seem to be picked up (even though the Archos is in LCD/TV mode with red light).
Does anyone have one of these working successfully? If so, any help would be appreciated!
