Default on car I don't own

I signed for a car for my ex wife and she made the payments through my bank account. A year later she was made redundant and so I had to try and find the money.I am self employed and soon I was falling behind with payments. I paid most payments but late until on the final occasion they told me that the policy had been stopped and they where requesting the car to be returned and a full payment of balance.
I infomed my ex what was happening and she informed me that the car was locked away having a bump with no tax or insurance on it. I received a sorn penalty as a bonus.
I then received letters of intent and bayliff notices but I then I noticed that the account no I had been paying for had the wrong regisrtation .I have explained this to two debt collection agencies and a bayliff when they tried to collect the car. Neither has procceeded any further with action against me since.
Now the original finace company has issured notices against me but the registration no of the car still does not match the one I have been paying for. I have read your forums for advise but this does not conform with any other problems. I have however asked them for a copy of the agreement along with the £1 and the have replied. The agreement has a different reg attached to my account. Where do I go from here? What happens to the cars that I have and have not been paying for
