    Nexuss,

I've made tens of thousands in net profit personally from the game, but that is neither here nor there. Yes, you're 100% right that more people lose than win, but tell me, what difference is that from starting a business where 90% fold in the first 2 years or even day trading where 90% don't make a profit? Are you saying don't do it? I disagree with that. And are you saying people don't lose their homes from starting businesses or putting too much in the stock market?

If someone hasn't got a clue, then best that they don't do anything that requires any effort or thinking. Play the lottery or something equally pointless like bingo or the roulette. There is no free lunch. Even the freerolls mentioned cost nothing to enter and the money up for grabs is real, but it still takes time and knowledge to maximise the chances of winning.

Like I said, for those who don't have any discipline nor want to put any effort into understanding what it is they're getting themselves into -- it's all a big risk! But that goes for most things in life.

A bit like trusting the Government and bankers then. Give me gambling over that lot any day.

Not having a dig, but never quite saw the `skill` in poker (only ever played a few times though), always seemed to me that the cards dealt and turned over either made a decent hand or they didn`t.

    Obviously I was missing something.

At least with `Snap` you have to be quick..... :j

I'd definitely stay away from the roulette table. That is clearly a mug's game! Same with slot machines etc..

Mathematically speaking it is possible to win at roulette, though in practice it is unlikely to be possible (relies on having a low min. for the initial bet, high table limit and lots of capital, also you only ever make back your initial bet!)

If you actually enjoy playing Poker then even if you lose it's not such a bad thing (so long as you dont lose much it can be a cheap pass time). A guy I used to live with made a small amount of income playing poker, but not enough to make a living out of it.
  • if you can play with patience and without emotion then you can make decent money. I struggle with both! I just think oh what the hell all-in, and then lose... its so tough to think logically, and to forget about the money you have put in.

Those people probably never learned to play the game properly (or very well) and made the cardinal mistake of playing stakes much higher than their skill level.

There's an awful lot - knowing the strength of your starting hand. Knowing how many 'outs' you have at any given point (i.e. the odds of making a specific hand), the pot odds (how much it'll cost you to stay in the hand -v- how much you'll stand to profit if you win the hand) and even implied odds. There's knowing how to play a hand based on position off the button (you'd often play the same hand different ways depending on your table position) or on your assumptions about your opponant's hand strength. There's also knowing when to play tight and when to play loose and naturally when to bluff.

The people who tend to lose overall are the people who don't put the hours in learning those skills unfortunately.
