Anyone here like playing poker?

I play poker part-time and make some good money on the side, on top of my regular day job. To be honest, it's more of a money making hobby if anything.
Started off buying a few books and playing play money games. Realised later that there are places that I can get really good ebooks for no cost, so trawled around and found some. The one given on this site is particularly good which is power-poker-course.com but there are many other sites too offering ebooks based on different themes of the same game.
I'd save myself a lot of time, hassle and money had I read good ebooks like that one first. Having said that, there's also a lot of junk out there.
But a word of warning... poker isn't for everyone. If you are not disciplined with your money then do something else. Don't play with cash you cannot afford to lose, and if you're in debt then never play with your own cash. Instead, play for fun to learn the skills at no risk to your financial wellbeing. When you're ready, you can play for small change first to see how you get along. Like the stock market, understand the game first before risking anything.
Would like to know if anyone else knows of other decent sites out there, poker related?
Thanks!

I was playing loads of online roulette for a while, made some good money, but in the end I never knew when to stop just ended up getting a good balance and loosing it!
Thing with roulette is its all luck, atleast with poker there is some skill involved. When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.0 -

Yes, poker is skill related compared to roulette. That's why you never hear of a professional roulette player, but there are a ton of professional poker players. And what's better, at least in the UK the earnings are tax free... not so in other countries like the US.
I'd definitely stay away from the roulette table. That is clearly a mug's game! Same with slot machines etc..
:rolleyes:0 -
good luck with it.
found myself enjoying the thrill a bit too much = probably ended up a little bit up the year i did it seriously, and then a little down when I got bored. so I stopped
if you pm me your email address, I can send you some e-files that I downloaded a while ago that were quite good.
best result 1st in $10 tourney : prize - $1590, worst result blowing 1/3 of that thinking I was good enough to play at higher stakesI think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine0 -

LOL, probably got loads of them already! Ah, the higher stakes... the games get really tough at that level. My strategy is to stay at levels that I can comfortably win at... One bad day at the higher stakes game is enough to wipe anyone out!0 -
Is it really a good idea to encourage gambling on this board ?0

Hi Nexuss,
Agree with what you say, but this is not actually about encouraging gambling. My guess is that you probably don't play poker, so hence your query. I compare the game to the stock market... know your stuff and you increase your chances of winning. No guarantees. But in the long run it usually works out.
And like the stock market, or starting a business, or anything else that risks money in order to achieve a gain, the very fact that risks takes place then it's technically "gambling" as there are no dead certs. But people don't discourage stock market investing or even property investments either, but look at the results there now.
DYOR as they say!0 -
at its dullest poker is duller than cash for clicks and less risky than quidco
strangely I agree with both of you gambling eats money (and hence should not be encouraged), but poker is a game where skill and discipline will be rewarded.
its not like all on no 27 at rouletteI think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

There is people who thought the same and lost their homes, jobs, cars and everything basically since the poker boom a few years ago mainly due to online poker as they read posts like this and think it is ever so easy.0

You can always play freerolls. No gambling involved there at all. Of course there are usually thousands of other players but there are also smallish prizes as well if you get far.0

i am not really going to defend too strongly, as on balance you are right - there are more people who lose money than win it.
but, I didn't ever say it was easy, I said it took skill and discipline, not a combination that is common, and if OP has it - good for him, but he would do well to heed your warningI think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
