Does that acctually work, i thought they just send you more offers
Nah, you're thinking of some other company that make it sound like they'll stop your junk mail but they don't. The proper MPS does work, as we're registered with them and hardly get any unsolicited mail at all. :)

Remember though, that any company that you might have dealt with in the past and who still have you on their mailing list, have the right to send you stuff (and won't stop even if you register with MPS). You have to specifically ask them to be removed - sending their post back and writing "Not known at this address - please remove from mailing list" should usually do the trick. Or just phone them, as long as it's a freephone number. :)

Yeah It does work a treat. It's nice not to wade through piles of junk mail when you come home.

Only thing it can't stop is letter addressed to Owner/Occupier.

It take about 4 months to kick in and you do notice the difference

This is taken from the DTI website. Maybe of some help/info:-

    Unsolicited Telephone Sales Calls

It is unlawful for a business to make an unsolicited direct marketing telephone call to an individual, which includes consumers, sole traders and except in Scotland partnerships, if that person has either registered with the Telephone Preference Service or has previously told the caller that they do not wish to hear from them.

    Telephone Preference Service
    70 Margaret Street
    London, W1W 8SS

    Website: https://www.tpsonline.org.uk
    Registration telephone number: 0845 070 0707

    Unsolicited Marketing E Mails
New controls on unsolicited commercial e-mails (UCE) came into force in December 2003. The Regulations require that UCE can only be sent to an individual with the prior consent of the addressee, but with an exemption for UCE where the addressee has already given his or her e-mail address direct to the sender in the context of the purchase of a product or service.

This opt-in protection will apply to individual, but not corporate subscribers. The Regulations also state that regardless of who the UCE is sent to, it must contain valid sender and contact details. Complaints about apparent breaches of these regulations should be reported to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) who can be contacted as follows:

    Telephone: 01625 845 700
    E-Mail: mail@ico.gsi.gov.uk

There is also a non-statutory scheme that you can register with to not receive UCE - the EMPS (E-mail Preference Scheme) is operated by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) in the United States. Note that the database is held in the US, and personal data is not, therefore, covered by UK Data Protection legislation. For further details visit this web site: https://www.e-mps.org/en/

    Unsolicited Marketing SMS Messages
New controls on SMS messages came into force in December 2003. The Regulations require SMS messages to be sent only with the prior consent of the subscriber, but with an exemption where the subscriber has already given his or her mobile telephone number direct to a company in the context of the purchase of a product or service. This opt-in protection will apply to individual, but not corporate subscribers. The Regulations also state that regardless of who the SMS message is sent to, it must contain valid sender and contact details Complaints about apparent breaches of these regulations should be reported to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) who can be contacted as follows:

    Telephone: 01625 845 700
    E-Mail: mail@ico.gsi.gov.uk

In addition, the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) supports It's Your Choice scheme, enabling consumers to register their wish not to receive unsolicited SMS messages. A consumer's guide to SMS text marketing, explaining how to stop receiving messages from a specific company is available from the It's Your Choice web site.

Mobile phone numbers may also be registered free of charge with the Telephone Preference Service.

I just recycle it. I stick it in the big red post box at the end of the street. That way they can deliver it to someone else, saving paper and printing cost. If we all did this the royal mail will soon get sick of it and maybe stop delivering it.

All prepaid envelopes are returned, complete with a spoonful of my pet rabbits droppings.
They never take notice, but I feel a little better about it.

Yes but the poor people on minimum wage on opening have to put up with crap like this. I honestly hope you are joking, I used to work on letter opening for a catalogue company and people like you used to make me miserable. People put all kinds of things in from human waste to glass even a USED syringe, which actually stabbed one of the openers, she had to spend the next few months wondering if she had aids.

Hi there. Just thought I'd say:

I registered with the Mail Preference Service over a year ago and it most definitely DOES work! It takes about 2-3 months for the bulk of the garbage to dwindle away but now I don't get a thing! No more credit card applications, no more loan offers, and no more bloody "Solar Panel Heating" brochures! Just lovely, lovely freedom when I get home from work and DON'T stumble over a whole heap of crap-mail :j

Get registering - you'll not regret it!

    Best regards to all. :hello:

Will it not stop any freebies we order? or any important mail?

I used to send all junk mail in the pre-paid envelope (or unpaid too) to

    Direct Marketing(?) Association (DMS)
    Margaret Street
    London
Heard on Watchdog that they are the people responsible for selling the lists of names and addresses to companies so they can send us the junk. afer a long time I got a letter from the mailing preference service (did DMS moan to them about me?!!!) filled in the form and it has pretty much stopped.
I know I could have got in touch with them myself but this was much more satisfying...try it ;)

The optout address bounced back because royalmail have a spam filter on it. Is that ironic or what?
    I have a cunning plan!
