hi i have just recently moved into my new post as a sgt and have since been promoted to ssgt but my wife has started a teachers degree course and now they want to move me as they are saying there are no jobs in my area at ssgt i have a small 16 month old boy so my wife requires my support whilst on her placements and uni etc. they are saying i must take a post some 300 miles away and live there monday to friday. i just feel so annoyed and wondered who i can consult over this issue.

Could you have turned down the promotion. When I was in the RAF several people took that option.0

Welfare may be able to help you?0

I don't suppose there is anyone who might want to swop is there? Might be an opportunity for a single Staffie to get out of a place he/she is not happy in? Few beers in the Sergeants mess and you may discover someone there who would rather not be there. Either that or poke the RSM in the mouth and get busted down to Sergeant again. (not a serious suggestion obviously). Good luck.0

I would speak with welfare, best option, but at the end of the day you'll go where they'll tell you lol.
You could always opt to move into the mess leaving the MSQ with the missus.. Is it still free these days?0 -
Sounds like you have a straight choice - Your career or your family life.
Your promotion to SSgt will give you a few quid extra, a slightly larger pension and a higher seat up the table at Mess functions. However it wont compensate for being away from your family Mon-Fri, on top of the 6 month tours to Afghanistan that you'll still end up doing.
Turn it down and you'll have a smaller salary, smaller pension and a seat at the bottom of the table. You'll still have 6 months in Afghanistan, but you'll also have a wife and child that you will see Mon-Fri and a wife that will be a qualified teacher, earning a teachers wage, which is a hell of a lot more than you'd lose out on by turning your promotion down for the moment. Money Saving at its best!!!
My best advice is to tell the Army to give the promotion to someone else for now and spend some quality time with your family. They'll offer it you again in a couple of years, when you may be in a better position to accept it.0 -
thanks for the advice but im into my last 3 years so its a big decision to make0

Mate the monthly pension difference may be small but the lump sum is close to 10K difference (and who says you couldn't make WO2??)
Ok so you don't get to see the wife etc for a few days at a time
But look at all the extra money you will be getting from it (get you home etc etc) IE building that nest egg for when you do get out
As far as I'm concerned putting the hard work in now will pay for itself in years to come....you'd be a fool to turn down promotion.
WHen you get to the time we've served its all about the pension!!
Anyway when you hit your last two years you can have LOTS of time away with resettlement.....so its not going to be as hard as it sounds. If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0
