Struggling with this as a non-techie.

Have had no probs previously connecting wirelessly to internet via BT Home Hub.

On Friday, notification of a Windows update came up, said update could take up to an hour (took about 25mins). When I restarted computer, it would not go online wirelessly, just local access only. Can go online with cable ok, but this is inconvenient.

Went on Windows Help and they said to check IVP4 / 6, which I did and this is excepted from firewall and setting is to search automatically for this. (Hope this makes sense, sorry don't find it easy to explain).

Hub has been stable throughout and signal strength 'excellent', have restarted it and also switched off for a bit and on again. Feel the problem is in the computer, not the hub. There is an unsecured network in our neighbourhood which I can usually access in 'emergency', but this will only give local access only too. When I try to connect to the both, it says "connection taking longer than usual" before eventually failing to connect.

Anything obvious come to mind? Would so appreciate any tips.
Thanks

Go into windows update and then view update history and list the most recent updates, ie the updates dont directly before the problem. Also what version of windows do you have?

If you know all the connection details for your router (ssid, security key) it may be worth deleting the wireless connecton on the laptop (the one to your router, not the actual wireless card) and then recreating it.
  • System restore to the point before the Windows Update was installed.

Thank you for your replies. I don't really know what I am doing, but I identified the update (see above) and have uninstalled it. Wireless access is now back to normal thankfully.

Does it matter if I don't have this update?

    Thanks again all.

Service pack 2 is probably worth having. Do some research on SP2 and your network card/driver etc. Try and install it again see if it happens again.

Thanks. Don't know about the middle bit you suggested, but will try and install it again tomorrow, if you think it's worth another attempt!
