Kettle keeps blowing fuse! Any advice?

Hi

I recently bought one of those quick boil kettles from a Tchibo branch which was closing down. It had been reduced to £12.60 from about £50 - a bargain, or so I thought. It was pretty noisy as it came to a rapid boil, sort of making popping noises but I assumed this was due to the power.

Yesterday it tripped the electrical system and this morning I replaced the 13 amp fuse and it did the exact same thing, turning off the electrics to the house.

Here is my question. Is there anything I can do or should I just send the kettle off to landfill?

Not sure if I could claim back from Tchibo online and not sure if I can be bothered.

  • If it was within the warranty period it may be easier to go direct to the manufactuer, rather than being able to track down the parent company to accept responsibility.

What make of kettle is it?

Sound to me like the element has failed, little you can do but throw it away now unless you can get Tchibo to honour the gaurantee (assuming it has one) somehow.

It's not usually worth the time or effort to replace the element in a kettle nowadays. (unlike an oven or immersion heater).

It just says TCM which is what most stuff from Tchibo is labelled. Thing is the postage cost would wipe out any great benefit. I think I may just email them on their website. I may get lucky and them give me a voucher??? Worth a try. Thanks for replying.

It MAY be the element, but it may allso be just damp in the wiring causing your earth leakage detector to trip out your house electrics.

If your a bit handy with a screwdriver you could dismantle it and check all the electrics are dry and all connections are tight. (unplug it from the power first though)

If you cant see anything wet or loose or burned, then yes it probably is the element failed.

  • If it is one with a separate base it may have water in it, let it all dry out overnight somewhere warm and try it again, I had a duallit one that suddenly started doing that ,It was due to it being either overfilled or sloshing water on the base after refilling it. I think if the element had gone then nothing would happen at all.
