Bought Mercedes ML270cdi With Private Reg and No Log book

Hi guys, first post on here, but been using site for almost 6 months! Very Helpful!

Bought my girlfriend a 2000 Mercedes ML 270cdi last weekend of a friend.

He got a private plate put on it, and lost new log book.

He wants plate back on a certificate (retention?) and i want the logbook?

How do i go about doing both of these and do i need to do one before i can do the other?

thank You.

  • First off you will need to apply for logbook. You need form V62 (or you can get it at Post Office). Fill it out in your girlfriend's name. It will cost £25 (unless your friend has the green new keeper's slip from logbook). If your friend was keeper then get him to write a letter confirming sale of vehicle to your gf. Logbook will take 3-6weeks.

Once you have logbook you can apply to do retention or transfer of plate using form V317 - all the info is here . You can transfer plate into your friend's name by using this form. SO he will get retentionc ertificate and she will get new logbook in new registration mark. It cost £105, and application needs to be sent to local DVLA office.

  • It's going in my name incase we fall out! ha

Im sure the New keeperslip is there, there is full service history and the logbook with original plate, just not with his private plate!

Ok thanks a lot ill get the V62 from Post Office tommorrow and send it away with a letter from my friend.

Yeah hes paying whatever costs are incurred.

    Thanks

If you have the new keeper's slip (even with the original reg mark on it) then your logbook will be free of charge. Just fill out V62 with current reg mark and send slip stapled to it. The reference no on slip will match it all up so you'll get a free logbook.

Nope cos it has the wrong reg mark on it. You could fill it out and send with a completed V62 form. But you need teh V62 to put the correct reg mark on.

Surely it is the sellers job to do all of this, not the buyers?
  • went to DVLA today, they told me to get my friend to send away for new Log book which will take 3 days if i take it into them.

then get him to put his plate on retention which takes 8 days for a new logbook to come with original reg again.

Then send this away with me as new keeper.

If i send away V62 with my details, they have to write to him, get him to confirm sale and can take upto 6 weeks. than have all hassle of putting plate on retention!
  • Correct me if I am wrong, but as you now own the car, the plate is now yours. (or at least the right to display it as the DVLA call it).
