PC is connected to LAN but can't load www pages

Options
My brother lives in a student house and has used his pc in the past to access the internet via the LAN in the house.

Recently something must have changed because now he says he can't access any internet pages (although he can access his university's intranet, which seems strange as obviously this wouldn't be part of the LAN he is connected to because he doesn't live on campus).

He recently brought the pc home and we hooked it up to a usb broadband modem to see if it could load web pages then, and it could.

I've had him check some of the internet settings (e.g. 'Never dial a connection') and asked him if he can still see other computers in the house on the LAN, which he says he can.

So to me it doesn't immediately sound like there's a problem with his ethernet card or like anything else is broken, but I can't think of what settings may have been changed that might be causing this problem - router? firewall? who knows?

Can anyone make any suggestions as to what might be the cause?

Many thanks.
I am a cider drinker - like my father before me.

It sounds as though the student house belongs to the university. If so then the LAN connection is probably on the university network. If he can only get their intranet pages then this points toward his computer needing to be registered on the university network.
If he only gets to their intranet page then I would expect the first page that he sees would mention something along the lines that he needs to register.

You could get him to compare the LAN settings with one of the other computers in the house. At a command prompt (start >programs >accessories >command prompt) type ipconfig /all
The only difference in the settings should be the last block of the IP address.

bit of a long shot, but google "MTU settings" - I once had to change these to accomodate a change that the ISP made which resulted in internet connectivity being allowed but failure of www traffic.
