Credit Rating and getting a mortgage

I will be moving soon (buying my first place) and need to get a few things - washing machine, tv, etc and was planning to buy them on credit, stick the money away for a year and earn a little interest.
However after recently speaking to a friend who tried to do the same thing, he said getting a mortgage severly affected his credit rating and was refused credit. Is this right? Have other people had the same problem?

Something funny with your friend I think...
In your shoes I'd wait till I had the mortgage & moved in before getting anything on tick: Don't put the mortgage at risk, and you don't know what last-minute expenses you might have....
Hope it goes well. cheers!
