I would wait until after 22nd October as that is when Windows 7 is released.
XP prices will drop after that as Microsoft are reducing their support for XP
XP OEM versions do not come with microsoft support which is no great loss.
You can get a chep XP cd from anywhere its the Certificate of Auhenticity (COA) that you pay for
  • would i still get updates etc and be able to download service pack 3 etc
  • Yep, but I can't see Windows XP dropping much further in price. Instead it will just become really hard to come by! You can buy Windows 7 as cheap as XP.

  • To be fair my pc is a few years old xp will be the best os to run on it,if i buy a new xp cd off Ebay and install it will it configure my existing pc components drivers etc automatically as i havent any discs for them,to be fair when i first installed Ubuntu it seemed to pick everything up,i have seen one on Ebay i will copy and paste the details below

Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 free Update to SP3
Can be installed on any PC such as Dell,HP or NON Brands
Not dependent on any PC manufacturer

THIS IS THE FULL OPERATING SYSTEM AND NOT JUST A SERVICE PACK 2 VERSION!
Licence KEY (COA) not activated, can be activated on all computers
Item will be shipped with Licence Key (has little traces of use), Operating System english OEM (Fujitsu Siemens; DELL; HP or other brands) CD
  • Hmmm... wonder what they mean by "little traces of use?"

How is "Licence Key not activated" consistent with "Licence Key (has little traces of use)"?

Surely it's either activated or not? It can't be a little bit activated.

    Just what I was wondering!:eek::eek::eek:

That one sounds a bit illegal to me!

  • Thats what i thought lol i looked at previous sales of the said item and sometimes the description says "licence key sticker has traces of use" i havent got a clue what thats is supposed to mean either
  • As far as I'm aware, this would be what you would need.

Did your laptop ever have XP installed though. i.e. if you look on the bottom, is there a Microsoft sticker on it?

Hi to be fair a guy at work built it years ago(desktop) it came with xp but i wasnt given any discs with it after about 4 years i had problems with it it ,im a novice and after using an av programme i ended up wiping half my system ! and it was knackered after that ,only after using a pc at the local library(over 6 months) after googling, i discovered an os called ubunbtu i ordered their os which was delivered to my door free of charge , i was able to get my pc to boot from cd and i loaded ubuntu wiping the remnants of the xp that no longer worked a few months down the line ubuntu has only been good in the way my son can play lots of shoddy on line free games without infecting my pc,but i miss xp i had been using it for years and would like it again but im out of work at the moment and so would need to find it at a good price
