Hello loulou41
This thread will probably be moved shortly (I've contacted the board guides) to the 'In my home' board, where it should get more views and responses for you.;)

Assuming it's a straight run, you could be looking at anywhere from £500 upwards.
A real carpenter would use real compnents. However I would suggest using Richard Burbage stair parts, available from timber merchants and DIY stores. The last time I did this I think the materials came to around £200. It took me a full day on the job plus I had to get the banisters machined and pre drilled by a carpenter.

I'm a real carpenter and i use Richard Burbidge stuff.Normal staircase with return landing between 350 and 450 depending on materials and extras.0

We ripped our bannister out as it was hideous, do you really need one?I haven't got one!0

My husband did ours but he is quite good at DIY you can get a video with complete instructions, it costs £4.99 but if you buy the stair parts the money is refunded. We bought ours from here http://www.stairpartsonline.co.uk/ they were quite a lot cheaper than B & Q even after paying for delivery0

Is that illegal? After I took mine out, it was suggested to me that it would be inadvisable/illegal to sell my house like that as it was dangerous. This didn't sound very probable to me, but I've not looked into it as I've no plans to move. If it's true, you could get them to fix it as part of the offer.0

Yes you do. An unguarded stair is in contravention of building regulations. See aproved document K - Protection from falling, collision and impact.
After all what if you have a vistor to your house who is elderly or someone with a child? What if you had to exit down the stairs in the event of a fire with your sight obscured by smoke or a power cut? What if you just slipped?0
