Eeeew! Horrible strip light! How to get rid of it?!

We are just about to move into a new house but the bloody builders have put a disgusting strip light!!!
How do we take it down asap? I'm no electrician but have done a fair amount of DIY and have no problem getting stuck in!
We'd be looking to replace with either some spotlights or the bulb off a wire to put a shade on.

Thanks for any help!!

it should be a straight forward replacement job.
strip light for a ceiling rose. ie a single bulb. both 240v?

you may have to cap off the earth wire. not normally needed with a plastic rose.
    Get some gorm.

If you just fit a ceiling rose and a simple drop pendant there will be a terminal in the ceiling rose for the earth. If you decide on a spotlight bar then there will normally be an earth terminal in there as well.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • I thought you had to be Part P qualified to undertake any electrical work these days? Or is it okay if you're only working in your own house?

swapping like for like is allowed by the DIYer.
    generally.

Hi we too had the exact some thing when we moved into our new house..awful it looked! we had it removed and a bar put in with 4 spot lights on, at the other end of the kitchen we had the hanging light fitting removed and another bar put in with 3 bulbs..looks so so much better..god knows whatever possesed them!! It took our friend about half hour if that to do.
When we get the kitchen redone in years to come we are going to get one of those cable lights across the whole ceiling where the lamps can be moved accordingly as love those!

Is this like-for-like? Swapping what is presumably an efficient tube for something else with different power/earthing/heat dissipation requirements?

afaik they dont go into such detail. a light fitting is a light fitting.
swapping a 40w tube for a 60w bulb is hardly the crime of the century.

er, its still a lighting circuit
& if its a standard light fitting they put up, it would be a cfl bulb
