new bank account with no job?

Options
Is it possible to open up a new bank account while you dont have a job? I already have one with abbey but I'd like a new one with a different bank and would have over £2000 to start one with.
Every bank im looking at requires you to have a job (was made redundant 2 months ago) and i'd like a normal current account i.e with a visa card.
does anyone have any suggestions?

You would need to open a basic bank account since you are not employed. Some CRA's report it as a 'current account'.

I would recommend either RBS Key Account, Natwest Step Account, or Barclays Cash Card Account. They offer VISA cards.

And also you might have the opportunity to upgrade at a later date to Vantage - none of the others mentioned will let you get interest on your balance

Thanks for the other replys, I was about to go for the Lloyds account as you recommended when i clocked this :

    The Cash account doesn’t include:
    • overdrafts and loans,
    • cheque books,
    • withdrawals from any non-Lloyds TSB cash machine,
    • credit interest.
That's a real deal breaker for me when the barclays basic lets you use any Link machine

Indeed you are acorrect about the Lloyds TSB basic bank account.

This is why I didn't include it in my list when I replied to your thread earlier, as it doesn't let you withdraw cash from other cash machines.

I would go for any basic bank account besides LTSB, which I mentioned previously in this thread.

You may well still be able to get a 'full' current account without a job, provided that you have a reasonable credit history.

Don't be put off by the banks that say things about paying in, say, £1000 per month. This is often just to get a higher rate of interest in the account, but you're still entitled to open one and not pay that much in.

Halifax's Reward account doesn't require you to pay in any money each month. If you pay in £1000, they'll give you £5, but if you don't, then there's no charge. It may be worth giving it a go, and see if they'll accept you.

    Gti,

I've checked on all bank websites and almost all of them doesn't say how much you need to put in. As long as it's a minimum of £1.
