Dates in excel

I'm having trouble getting excel to recognise dates, I'm using this formula to create a value but it doesn't seem to work

=IF($E2-NOW()<=$K2,$J2,)

I've formatted the E2 cell as a date but it keeps bringing up a #VALUE error in the cell with this formula.

Anyone got any ideas why

What values are in E2, K2 and J2?

I'm trying to set up a scheduling sheet for tasks i.e if there is only 30 days left between todays date and the date in e2 flag up red if there are 37 days to go show yellow. k2 is the amount of days before warning becomes relevant so if today minus the date in e2 is greater than this there is nothing to be shown, j2 is a similar formula but just refines on the dates to show either red or yellow depending on how close we are to todays date.

I have just worked out though that excel is inputting the dates in e2 in the American style of month, day then year and this is where the problem is coming from is there any way I can change this.

I feel rather silly now, my computer was still set up with American English as default.
