How much power is too much through the front wheels?

  • So far i've avoided FWD like the plague, except for shopping trolley type cars.

Nothing makes you feel or look a plonker than having more a car that spins it's wheels and snakes all over the road whilst the old chap in his elderly auto Benz or BM or Jag just plants his foot and disappears but quick and smoothly with no drama.

Can anyone explain what on earth pleasure they get from a quick FWD car please.

They obviously derive pleasure from leaving rubber marks on the road surface, highly mature thing to do..

Not quite nothing. Get on youtube and type in "7 second ring king." Rear wheel drive in the wrong hands.

I've driven various types of drivetrain and they all have their charicteristics and you can have fun. I don't have anything against FWD, I challenge you to hammer an original 1275 Mini and not have fun.

The most fun you can have is something like a 1300 Mk1 or 2 Escort, Chevette, Viva, Avenger, Sunbeam or similar on skinny tyres. You don't have to be going fast to have fun.

Nonsense...FWD just requires more skill as a driver to get most out of it;)
In all seriousness though, just the other day a BMW M3 came out of a junction in front of me, rear wheels spinning (obviously 'planting his foot'), and spun round coming to a standstill facing us...
I am a believer that if you drive a high powered RWD car, you should have to pass an advanced driving test or something.

    You're probably right there & I haven't got it :)

Having said that 290+ bhp through the rears takes a bit of nouse but at least your not trying to steer through the same!!!

In a straight line mine will hang on to most of whats out there but bring on the bendy bits & it all goes pants... it can't get the power down.

Leave the TCS on & it cuts power 'cos the front wheels can't cope....Switch the TCS off & you end up with harveybobbles youtube links, Not funny at 90 quid plus per tyre.
Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!
  • Have you considered fitting a performace limited slip differential?

My old 328 caught me out a few times, not that i spun 180 but I could feel a slide, woke me up that morning!
  • I've had both FWD and RWD cars. Both are fun. There's nothing particularly wrong with performance FWD cars.
    Happy chappy

No laws against how fast you get upto the speed limit.;)

    Anyone heard off this?
