tax problem

hello a few months ago i filled in a milegae claim form my claim was for

£4854.23 my employer paid me £1610.04 so i was claiming for £3244.21

i was then told i had to fill a self assement tax form because i was claiming over a certain amount
ive never filled in a self assement tax form before

a few months later i recieved a letter from them saying i have overpaid tax of £1112.00

the letter also says that "expenses payments recieveid employment box 16 has been changed to £0.00 because this fiqure has been entered in two places on your return"

i was just wondering what shall i do and what are my options

thanks

You were not claiming a tax refund of £3244. You were claiming a refund of the tax on the £3244.

I still don't make sense of your figures though.

hi sorry i was claming for my mileage allowence of £3244
    here is the break down

i did 13,417 miles last year which comes to 4854.25
my company paid my allowence which is taken off so i was claming for 3244

I think you will find that to work out the correct amount the first 10,000 miles are at 40p per mile and after that it is 25p per mile - which is £4000 for the first 10,000 miles plus 3417 x 25p which is £854, a total of £4854 less the contribution from the employer, you get back tax at the rate of 20p (basic rate) in the £ on the difference - I know this from previous experience.

hi thanks for your replies i think you have misunderstood my question li have already worked out the correct fiqures as for the first 10000 miles at 40p and 25p for the rest so like ive said earlier im claming for 3244 with employers contribution taken off,

my question is why have i not been paid that and only been paid for payed 1,112.00

Because you don't claim the whole difference, just the TAX on the difference (at 20%) as has been explained to you above

  • HMRC does not reimburse expenses, so as dzug said in post #2, you are not claiming back £3,244, you are claiming tax relief on it. If you are a 40% tax payer you would get 40% of this amount back and if you are a 20% tax payer you would get 20% of this amount back. You don't seem to be geting either of these amounts so I presume there is something else in the equation.

because you can only claim it once and you put it twice in your return.

as we can't see your return or the information the inland revenue has we can't really comment

If I remember correctly you automatically get a self assessment form if you are claiming back more than £2500 in any given tax year, by your own figures you would get back 20% of £3244, which is £648.80, btw they only do round pound accounting.
