One reason the nature of the funds is important is that some of them, such as funds invested in corporate bonds, would pay interest.Funds invested in property and shares pay dividends.This may perhaps be where some confusion has arisen.
It's quite possible that the payments your father was getting were actually a mix of the earnings (interest,divis) on the investments plus a portion from the capital itself - though he would have been told the money was from the capital because because the earnings are not tax free.Trying to keep it simple...
