AA membership - is my rate reasonable?

I've been a member for 20 years so don't particularly want to change. I've not used the service for at least 10 years - not that that's relevant because I view it as insuring against an unforseeable event.

I just have home start and roadside - nothing else - and there's a 6% increase for the next 12 months to £53.50. I've no idea whether this is reasonable or not - it's just over £1 per week to insure against a breakdown so

Oh, and AA always refer to the home start bit as "complimentary home start" because I've been a loyal customer.

I could ring them and ask for a reduction but to be on firmer ground before doing so I thought I'd ask here first for your views.

TIA

If I ran a banger I would stick to the Big Boys until they got fed up and threw me out for overuse of the service. You, like most of their patrons however, rightly see breakdown service just as another insurance that you take in your stride. Coupled to the reduction in real terms of patrols actually on the road at any one time, I would make the switch to Autoaid. Cheap insurance for what might never happen.
  • My Mum has also been a member for over 20 years but for the last few years, when she gets her renewal letter, I compare prices/services with other breakdown companies and the AA have always reduce the price when she phones and tells them how much less she could pay elsewhere.

I don't know; maybe because I've been with them for 20 years? Does your wife have relay or stay mobile? I don't.

Hi I'm the original OP on this thread. Thanks for all the replies.

I read the two threads elsewhere on AutoAid (the for and against threads); I'd never heard of them until I started this thread today. I was very impressed. I've just rung the AA to cancel my membership and they offered to add Relay to my complimentary Home Start and Roadside for the same price i.e. £53.50; so I took it as I am up against a time constraint. I'll see what the renewal price is next year and would certainly consider AutoAid from what I've read on the threads.

I realise that AutoAid get you all the way home whereas, I think, the AA may do a change over depending on the distance from home but as I rarely travel more than 80/100 miles from home I can't see it being a problem.

My only concern is that, from reading the threads, I didn't realise that many of the breakdown companies don't assist you in the event of an accident! I'm a bit shocked by that and fingers crossed until next year's renewal.

I hope this has helped anyone having to renew by the end of this weekend.
