which factor sun cream for the caribean

im going to cuba on 22nd may, i have never been to anywhere like this, mostly spain, majorca, turkey and tenerife.

i have fair skin and it takes the sun well meaning i brown very easily, but i do still burn ,when i go on hol i usaully start with a 15 factor cream then down to 8 then 4.

Now im assuming it will be different in cuba, should i start higher or stick to 15 all the way thru holiday. I usually take 1 bottle and buy as i need it. But as its meant to be very expensive to buy in cuba i want to take my supply with me.

Can anyone offer any advice on what factor to take for my full holiday.

the sun is basically the same wherever you go the factor just tells you how long you can stay in the sun before reapplying suncream factor 15 = 15 mins factor 40 = 40 mins etc
i would advise you to buy your suncreams before you go somerfields & superdrug are both doing specials at the moment or there is always trusty old poundland
    hope this helps a little

Times had an article all about suncream here.

I wear factor lead suit :rotfl: You might want to invest in an extra cream just for your face, neck and hands as that is where the most damage will show.

I am fair-skinned and went to the caribbean last year - used Piz Buin Once factor 30 and never burnt at all - you only need apply it once.

Never heard this before! Surely it wouldn't be worth anybody buying factor 15, you may as well buy the highest factor in the shops if this were the case!

The sun is stronger in the Cuba and you are more likely to burn than at home. I was in Mexico recently which is close by. I'm fair skinned but tan easily. I was on Factor 20 on week 1, and Factor 10 on week 2.

My eldest son is fair skinned and burns easily. He was on Factor 45 all the holiday. My other son is fair skinned but tans easily, and he was on Factor 30 all holiday.

I don't know about Cuba, but Mexico had a light breeze blowing most of the time. It took the heat out of the sun, and some newbie holidaymakers didn't realise how strong it was and burned.
Here I go again on my own....

I can definitely recommend Piz Buin Once. We went to the Maldives last summer and wore factor 15 for the 1st week, then factor 8. We didn't burn at all (I normally burn because I don't apply cream regularly enough) and with this we only had to put it on once a day - in the morning before breakfast so it had time to soak in. We were in and out of the pool and sea all day and it never even washed off.
The tubes of it only seem small but because you only apply it once a day you don't use lots.

  • thanks to all for the helpful replies, i have heard also the puiz buin once is good and some of you recommend this, i might take a higher factor for my face and shoulders etc and use a 15 or 20 on my body, i want to get a good tan too its alright having high protection but i need to get my annual tanning as it has to do e all year.

still to decide on the factors to go for but i now have a better idea of what to aim for, i was thinking of buying extra so i have different factors and plenty of them so if i have any left i can take them back for a refund once i get back my holiday. i dont think the shops should have a problem with that.
