Best webcam/instant chat software?

Options
I have been using Google Chat for webcams and the sound and picture quality are both very good, but I find the user interface rather clunky, and not intuitive, especially for older relatives. I have also tried Logitech Vid which is very easy to use but the picture is rather blocky and the sound breaks up. Can anyone recommend a good system to use please?

  • There are a number of competitors. MSN messenger offers a pretty straightforward alternative.

They tend to be undermined by the need to route comms via a central point, rather than use proper peer-to-peer comms, which would not only free the medium but increase the bandwidth and quality of the video.

MSN is usually bundled with a windows install. I've also heard that Skype is pretty good, but can't confirm as I've never used it.
You'll need to be careful with Skype, according to the T&C's some things are chargeable.

If your only SKYPE to SKYPEing then its free, however I think that the interface is no better than Google. As for MSN \ Windows Live Messenger it is not usually installed as default but is a free download from MS, the one that is installed on XP is Windows Messenger which does not have the features inc Cam chat.

There are some other options out there but unless your setting them up for the people you may be best sticking with Google.
