Just got my electricity bill help!
Options
Hi all,
I have been living at a new build apartment for two years (rented) and initially called around to register water, council tax and electric. The council tax and water was fine but when trying to sort out electric records of the address where not found.
After two years of never receiving a bill I assumed it may have been in with the rent. Today I received a bill for £2,100 !! and I am so scared as to what to do as I don't have that kind of money to just give away.
I have noticed that the bill is not accurate as the first few months I was not a tenant. The bill is from E.ON and addressed to my land lord. Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thank you, -P

First of all need to find out what the original meter reading was for when you moved in, I assume you have it written down somewhere seen as you were phoning around. Then you need to call them with the original reading at the correct date and give them todays reading and ask them to send you a accurate bill
edit - assumption is the mother of all f**k ups or assume makes an 'as5' out of 'u' and 'me'0 -

You won't be giving it away, you'll be paying for the electricity you've used.0 -

Welcome to the forum.
"It may have been included with the rent"?
Many people might say that they hoped they might get away with not paying!!
The position is that you or landlord have to let them know the apartment is occupied - some stay empty for years and how would the Utility company know?
As soon as you move into a property you have entered a legally binding 'deemed contract' and are liable. You should have noted the meter reading and contacted the Utility company.
You can sort out the division of responsibility, for the first few months, between yourself and landlord but the bill is valid.0 -
Hi pauldlc,
Cardews advice is correct, when you first move in you are obliged to notify the supplier of your utilities. If you are unsure who provides those utilities, the builders or owner of the property should inform you.
Because we weren’t notified of you moving into the property the bill has been created incorrectly, we simply didn’t have the information required to bill for the right dates, meter readings from those dates also wouldn’t have been taken.
If you provide all the relevant details to E.ON now the bill will be corrected, however if a meter reading hasn’t been recorded for the move in date we are allowed to use an estimate based on other actual readings that have been taken.
Don’t worry about paying for this bill in one lump sum, you will be able to reach an agreement to pay for this energy in more realistic amounts, maybe as part of your payment plan going forward, as you now know you’ll have to pay for what you are using.
Try to take steps to find a tariff that suits your requirements best, also you may benefit from taking energy efficiency advice from us. If you can reduce the amount of energy you’re using the amounts you need to pay going forward will be lower.
