thanks again everyone - you're all so helpful on here. We did pierce the bulge after looking at various bits of stuff on the internet and were able to catch the initial stream in a pan and then just left a massive polythene bag to catch any more drips overnight - there wasn't actually that much water in the end than goodness. the plumber came this morning as promised and put a new bit of pipe in where the screw had gone in - he's great and only charged us £40. He drained and then refilled the CH system - it's a normal water tank one by the way not a combi - and then repressurised it. The only downside is that we had to remove upstairs landing and daughter's bedroom carpets which were only laid the day before! thanks for your tips re that in fact the OH didn't seem to have too much trouble lifting them - let's hope that wasn't because they weren't fitted that well in the first place! the carpet fitter was due to come back next week anyway as the hall carpet had been wrongly cut so we'll ask him if he'd mind refitting them for a fee. the plumber said we'd had a lucky escape - he went to a house where they'd had new carpets fitted and then went away on holiday and came back to literally the ceiling on the floor and wet plaster everywhere.0

Tip for squeaky floorboards that's worth trying in the future ... talcum powder sprinkled between them... although if you were fitting carpets on top it'd be annoying if they started squeaking again a month later.0

When I had a sagging ceiling, I was able to flatten it by fixing a piece of plywood over the area, screwing it into the joists above. Did this whilst the ceiling was still wet & left it whilst the whole area dried out.
After removing it, the ceiling was flat again & I simply patched the screw holes up & repainted.0
