my friend had 2 elective c sections, due to the fact she was afraid to give birth naturally.
where you have had medical problems last time I think it would be sensible to have a c section.
  • I'm a third year student nurse and just done my stint in theatres. Spent a couple of days in c-sec theatres and they have two theatres an elective theatre and an emergency theatre. You can pretty much just say Im to scared after the first child and would like a c-section. They will allow you to have this option.

When I was in the elective theatre I was told that for many of the women it wasnt necessary but they wanted one. They dont like to do it unecessarily because it costs a lot more to do a c-sec than a natural birth and theres also a lot more after care needed. I really cant see this being a problem though.

Good luck and hope everything goes well for you.

My wife couldn't have a natural birth for medical reasons, and had a letter from her consultant to say so. Despite this, you wouldn't believe the pressure she came under from the maternity unit to try pushing for a while, even though her condition is life threatening. I got the impression they are under political pressure to reduce the percentage of C-section births.

That's exactly how they were with me. And when you're in the throes of labour is not a good time to be making vital decisions!

Yes it looks like we made it to the end
  • thanks everyone it has been affecting my decision on whether to try for another one ideally yes i would like to have had a natural birth but i was told i would have the same problem again and at one point they weren't sure if they could stop the bleeding. I had no blood pressure and was bleeding out faster than it could be pumped in, i spent 4 hours in theatre while they tried to stablise me (well if you're going to almost die you may as well do it properly!) My mum was there and she outside theatre it was chaos but reading my notes it came across that everything was fine and under control so i think that may be why dr said go for it (it is the same hospital).
I think it will have to be a bridge to cross when i get to it

My wife has a long term neurological condition, so we knew what we wanted from day one, but had months of pressure. Her medication also means no breast feeding, and it got tiresome explaining to endless hospital staff why we were using bottles, and even after explaining getting a lecture about the benefits.

Although the staff did a great job in the end, the whole process felt like a conveyor belt. In an age where women are supposed to be in control of their bodies and healthcare, there sometimes seems to be no allowance made for individual circumstances.

Oh yes, the breastfeeding, don't get me started on that one . So between a c-section and bottle feeding there's a LOT of explaining to do!!!!
