Fraud on card

Just tried to access my Barclaycard online account to make a payment.

Not able to get online and given a number to ring which turned out to be thr fraud department.

My card has been used fraudulently to the tune of at least £1Kin the last 10 days or so. Good on them for spotting it.

Now I never use this card in shops or restaurants or machines as i have forgotten what the PIN is. However I did have occasion to speak to Barclaycard about a query on a purchase. I have never felt comfortable with being asked the security code on the back of the card which I was and I gave it, after all I was talking to Barclaycard. The fraud has been since then. Does it ever happen that the card information is used fraudulently after this sort of information giving?

Barclaycard would know that number anyhow, so them asking you for it is more to confirm that you are who you say you are (or at least have the physical card in your presence) rather than telling them anything they didn't already know. If you're happy that it was indeed Barclaycard you were speaking to at the time (i.e. you called them rather than 'they' called you) then I don;t think that that would be the source of any fraud.

Never say never, some CC call centres have been rife with fraudsters selling customer details, so it is entirely possible that some fraud actually starts at the call centres!

There have been many media reports about this, let alone internal investigations!
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!

True, but the point I was making was that someone in the CC call centre would have access to details telling them what the security number on the card is anyhow- they don't need to wait for the cardholder to phone up and tell them...

Not always, some systems prevent agent access unless the customer is passed through the IVR system to the agent and passes security.
