Hi

Our double glazed front door lock is playing up - basically it gets stuck in 'double lock' mode - and takes hours to sort out - the key just turns on and on without unlock the door.

Its just knackered - oil etc doesnt do anything.

It wont be long before (i) get locked out one day or (ii) cant close the door at night!

Ive posted some images of the locks (inside & outside) and a side on view so you can what type it is.

CAn I replace this lock / bolt / handle - and how much should I be locking to pay (and how much for someone to do it?)

I cant afford a new door (quoted £500+)

to me it looks like the wrong barrel is fitted and should be an oval shaped lock. Have you tried to unlock it with another key did this give you the same result?

It could be either your barrel or the doors gearbox that sounds faulty. The door looks aluminium to me so replacment parts can be hard to come by, if you are confident at diy they have a go otherwise it could be best to get someone in.

Im pretty sure thats an easy job, i replaced one on my old dg door, I believe they are called euro locks. Not particularly cheap but cheaper to do as a diy job than getting a locksmith.

Open the door and remove the plate where the lock bolt is on the side, there should be another screw or two behind that plate level with the lock undo that / them and the lock should just pull out.
pop off to your local hardware store / lock smith or take the dimentions and look in http://www.screwfix.com/search.do;jsessionid=J4LX2LF0Z2NTGCSTHZOCFFI?_dyncharset=UTF-8&fh_search=euro+lock&searchbutton.x=6&searchbutton.y=12&searchbutton=submit screwfix, should take you 20 mins to do easily.
You may click thanks if you found my advice useful

It could be a worn cam on the cylinder or the lockcase/gearbox that isnt moving correctly.

Your right mikey it is a euro cylinder but if you look at the hole it should be fitted with an oval cylinder. but in all honesty I think its the lockcase that might be U/S

What would your advice be? If I remove the lock & take it to a locksmiths to buy a replacement, my fear is that I might not be able to get one & fit the old one back in.

Or can I replace it with an alternative cylinder?

I'd like to be able to change it and have a new set of keys
  • Ive seen cheap euro cylinder locks on ebay - with various sizes 45/50 etc etc

How do I determine the size of my lock?

the cheapest way would be to actually find out which part has actually gone.
i would stay away from the cheap locks on ebay there cheap for a reason.

take your cylinder to a locksmith/diy shop you measure from the fixing screw to the ends in mm that gives you your size it looks like it should be 25/25 although yours does stick out abit on the inside possibly 25/35.

if you were to pay for it doing your looking at about £150 (worst case ) if its the gearbox and if its availible
